About the show

How it was made

The Role Models is a serialized narrative podcast about the companies shaping the future, told one company per season, from the record.

Season One is OpenAI. It starts with a conspiracy in a Toronto lecture hall and a war over researchers in the hallways of a Montreal conference. Then come the dinners, a billion-dollar promise sealed with a handshake, a nonprofit that discovers what it really costs to build artificial general intelligence, and the emails that split its founders. It ends with the five days in November 2023 that nearly destroyed the company.

The show is built from the public record: emails and texts released in litigation, court filings, company blog posts, contemporaneous press coverage and on-the-record interviews. Quotations are read verbatim and attributed. Some scenes and dialogue are reconstructed or composited for the drama. Where the parties disagree, both accounts are told and attributed, and a company's blog post written during a lawsuit is treated as what it is: advocacy by one side. Allegations in court filings are unproven claims. Each episode's show notes list its sources, and full transcripts are published alongside every episode.

The Role Models is not a hit piece and not a hagiography. It is a story about ambition, money, fear and control, told by people who wrote a remarkable amount of it down at the time.

The Role Models is produced with AI-generated voices (ElevenLabs) that perform words from the public record; they are not intended to resemble any real person. The show is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI, Microsoft, or any person depicted.
